Background Accordingtohistoricalrecords,asearlyastheNeolithicAgeinChina,peoplestartedtoraisesilkwormstoproducesilk.Themethodsofsilkweavingevolvedgraduallyoverthecenturies,fromweavingafewstrandsofsilkintosimpleclothingtocraftingelaboratedesigns,dress,andembroideredtapestries.BythetimeoftheSongDynasty,silkweavinginChinahadreachedagoldenageofexcellence,andseveraltraderoutesestablishedtoexportsilkproductstovariouspartsoftheworld.Theculturalsignificanceofsilkweavinghadgrownsomuchthatitbecameapartofpeople'sdailylives,withitsownuniqueterminologyandpractices. TerminologyAssociatedwithChineseSilkWeaving 1.蚕(cán)-Silkworms:ThesilkwormsaretheprimarysourceofsilkproductioninChina.Fromtheeggslaidbythefemalesilkworm,peoplehatchthemandfeedthemwithmulberryleaves. 2.缫丝(sāosī)-ReelingtheSilk:Afterthesilkwormspinscocoonsarounditself,thecocoonsareboiled,andthesilkthreadsarecarefullyandsystematicallyreeledontobobbins. 3.纱(shā)-RawSilk:Thisreferstotheuntreatedsilkthreadbeforeit'sspun,dyed,orwovenintoafabric. 4.纹(wén)-Pattern:Theartisticdesignwovenintothesilkfabric.Thesilkpatternscanbegeometric,floral,orscenical. 5.胚(pēi)-Silkembryo:Therawsilkthreadbeforeitistwistedandspunintofabric. 6.绸(chóu)-Satin:Aluxurioussilkfabricwithasmoothandglossysurface.ItistheepitomeofChinesesilkfabric. 7.锦(jǐn)-Brocade:Adecorativefabricwovenwithraisedpatterns.BrocadeisaprominentfabricusedinChinesefashiondesign.
