英语专业大学生写作中词汇丰富性变化历时研究的中期报告 Introduction ThepurposeofthisresearchprojectistoinvestigatethechangesinvocabularyrichnessamongEnglishmajorcollegestudentsintheirwritingovertheyears.AsEnglishisasecondarylanguageformostChinesestudents,learningEnglishvocabularyhasalwaysbeenachallengingtask,especiallyforwriting.ThisstudyseekstoprovideinsightsintohowthevocabularyrichnessofEnglishmajorcollegestudents'writingshasevolvedovertheyearsandthefactorsinfluencingthechanges. LiteratureReview Theimportanceofvocabularyknowledgeinsecondlanguageacquisitionhasbeenwidelyrecognized.Researchershavefoundthatvocabularyplaysacentralroleincommunicationandisessentialforsuccessinacademiccontexts(Goulden,Nation,&Read,1990).Moreover,learningawiderangeofvocabularyenablesstudentstoproducemoresophisticatedandintricateexpressionsintheirwriting(Laufer&Nation,1999).Althoughtheawarenessofvocabularyimportancehasincreased,someresearchersfoundthatuniversitystudentsoftenusemorebasicandcommonlyusedwords,andtheirvocabularyrichnessislimited(Chen&Ge,2007). Methods ThestudyfocusesonthewritingsofEnglishmajorcollegestudentsfromfivedifferentuniversitiesinChina.Thewritingswerecollectedfromtheuniversityarchives,andthestudents'demographicinformationisalsocollected.Thewritingsconsistedofessaysandreportswithaminimumwordlengthof500words.Theparticipants'writingsampleswerecategorizedintofive-yearcohortscoveringtheperiodfrom2010to2020.Thevocabularyrichnessofthesampleswascalculatedusingthestandardizedmeasurementmethod,theVocabularyRichnessIndex(VRI)(Laufer&Nation,1999). ResultsandDiscussion TheVRIscoreswerecalculatedforeachofthecohorts,andtheresultsindicatedagradualincreaseinvocabularyrichnessovertheyears,withthesignificantdifferencesbetweenthecohortsinthefirsthalf(2010-2015)andthesecondhalf(2015-2020).Theincreaseinvocabularyrichnesscanbeattributedtoseveralfactors,includingimprovedEnglish-languageteachinginuniversities,accesstoawiderrangeofEnglishmaterialsandagreaterfocusoncultivatinglanguageproficiency.
