ResearchBackground AccordingtotheNationalGuidelinesforEnglishMajors(2014),cultivatingstudents'abilitytocommunicateeffectivelyinEnglishisoneofthefundamentaltargetsofEnglishteachinginhighereducationinstitutions.Vocabularyisacriticalcomponentincommunicativecompetence,whichencompassesproductiveandreceptivevocabulary.Productivevocabularyreferstothewordsthatstudentscanexpressandmanipulateinspeakingandwriting,whilereceptivevocabularyreferstothewordsthatstudentscancomprehendbutcannotuseactively. StudieshaveshownthatEnglishmajorstudentstendtohaveahighreceptivevocabulary,whiletheirproductivevocabularyisnotasextensiveastheywouldlike.Forinstance,LiuandZhang(2019)reportedthatwhiletheaveragereceptivevocabularysizeofChineseEnglishmajorstudentsisover8,000words,theirproductivevocabularysizeisaround4,000words.Therefore,itisessentialtoexplorethefeaturesofproductivevocabularyforEnglishmajorstudents.
