EnglishTranslationsof'LunYu' ThefirsttranslationisbyJamesLegge,aScottishsinologistwholivedduringthe19thcentury.Histranslationof'LunYu'isoneoftheearliestandmostwidelyacceptedworksintheEnglishlanguage.ThesecondversionisbyAnnpingChin,anativeofTaiwanwhoteachesatYaleUniversity.Hertranslationwaspublishedin2014,nearlyacenturyafterLegge'stranslation. ComparingtheTwoTranslations Overall,bothworksarewell-writtenandattempttocapturetheessenceofConfucius'steachings.However,oneissuewithLegge'stranslationisthatitmaybeoverlyliteralandarchaicformodernreaders.Chin'stranslation,ontheotherhand,seemsmoreaccessible,withacontemporaryEnglishstyle. Onesignificantdifferencebetweenthetwotranslationsisintheirapproachestotranslatingthetitlesofthesectionsin'LunYu.'InLegge'sversion,mostofthechaptertitlesareleftuntranslatedandpresentedinChinesecharacters.Conversely,Chinhastranslatedallofthetitlesof'LunYu'intoEnglish.ThismoveperhapsmakesthetextmoreaccessibletoEnglish-speakingaudiencesunfamiliarwithChinesecharactersandlanguage. Furthermore,Chin'stranslationprovidesaddednotesandexplanationsthroughoutthetext,providingnecessarycontexttoreaderswhomaynotbefamiliarwithConfucianismandChinesehistory.Legge'sversionprovidesminimalnotes,leavingreaderstorelyontheirownunderstandingofConfucianismtointerpretandcomprehendthetext
