Introduction
《围城》(TheFortressBesieged)isaclassicworkofmodernChineseliterature,whichhasbeentranslatedintomanyforeignlanguages,suchasEnglish,French,andGerman.AsoneofthemostfamousEnglishtranslations,thenovelwastranslatedbytherenownedtranslatorYangXianyiandhiswifeGladysYangin1973.Thetranslationhasbeenpraisedforitsaccuracyandfluency.However,asweallknow,thelanguageinliteraturehasitsownuniquestyleanditisoftendifficulttotranslateitwithoutlosingitsoriginalcharmandmeaning.Therefore,inthispaper,Iwillanalyzehowthetranslatordealtwiththelanguagevariationsin《围城》fromtheperspectiveoffunctionaltranslationtheory,andoffersomesuggestionsforpromotingcross-culturalcommunicationinliterarytranslation.
TheoreticalFramework
Functionaltranslationtheoryisanewtranslationtheorythatemergedinthe1980sandhasawiderangeofapplicationsintranslationpractice.Accordingtothistheory,translationisnotasimplelinguisticreplacementbutaprocessofcommunicationthataimstoconveythemeaning,function,andsocialandculturalvaluesofthesourcetext(ST)tothetargettext(TT).Intheprocessofliterarytranslation,thetranslatorneedstomaintaintheaestheticandculturalvaluesoftheSTaswellastoadapttothereaders’culturalbackgroundandlanguagehabits.
