Background TheChineseMaritimeLawisalegalframeworkthatgovernstheconductofmaritimeaffairs,includingshipping,navigation,andinsurance.AstheChineseeconomycontinuestogrow,theimportanceoftheChineseMaritimeLawininternationaltradelandscapeshasincreased.Consequently,therehasbeenanincreaseddemandforEnglishtranslationsoftheChineseMaritimeLawtofacilitatecommunicationbetweenChineseandEnglish-speakingparties. ConjunctionsplayacriticalroleinthelanguagestructureandsyntaxofbothChineseandEnglishlanguages.Theyareessentialincreatinglogicalconnectionswithinsentencesandexpressingrelationshipsbetweenideas.Moreover,conjunctionscontributetothegeneralcoherenceandcohesionoflegaltexts,whichultimatelyimpactstheireffectivenessincommunicatinglegalconcepts. Methodology Acorpus-basedexaminationofthecommonlyusedconjunctionsintheEnglishtranslationoftheChineseMaritimeLawwasconductedforthisstudy.ThecorpusconsistedoflegaltextsfromtheChineseMaritimeLawthathadbeentranslatedintoEnglish.Thetextswereanalyzedusingspecializedsoftware,whichidentifiedandrecordedtheusagecountofcommonlyusedconjunctions. ResultsandDiscussion TheresultsoftheanalysisshowedthatthemostcommonlyusedconjunctionsintheEnglishtranslationoftheChineseMaritimeLawwere“and,”“or,”“but,”“so,”and“if.”Theseconjunctionswerefoundtobeusedfrequentlyinlegaltextstoexpressrelationshipsbetweenideasandcreatelogicalconnectionswithinsentences.
