Thisstudyaimstoinvestigatetheeffectivenessofacorpus-basedchunkingteachingmethodonnon-Englishmajorpostgraduates’writingabilitiesinEnglishwriting.Thispaperpresentsthemid-termreportontheresearchprocess,includingtheresearchdesign,literaturereview,anddatacollection. II.LiteratureReview 2.1Thetheoryofchunking Chunkingimpliesgroupingorchunkingseveralwordstogetherinlanguageteachingandlearning.Chunkingenlargestheprocessingcapacityofworkingmemoryandreducestheloadonlong-termmemory.Chunkingallowsfortheprocessingofmoreinformationthanseparatewordsprocessedindependently(Nation,2013).Sinclair(1991)definesachunkas“anarbitrarysequenceofwordsthatrecursfrequentlyinalanguageandperformsacoherentmeaning”.Achunkisatypeofcollocation;anexampleofachunkisthephrase“kickthebucket,”whichreferstodying. 2.2Theimportanceofcollocationsinlanguagelearning Collocationreferstothewaywordscombineinalanguagetoformanaturalcollocation.Collocationscanbeformedbytwoormorewordsthatoccurtogetherandconveyaspecificmeaning,e.g.,“heavyrain,”or“agoodidea.”Theprocessofacquiringcollocationsiscrucialforlanguagelearnerssincethecorrectuseofcollocationscanenhancefluencyandaccuracyinthelanguage.
