非英语专业大学生英语自主学习实证研究 Abstract WiththeincreasingimportanceofEnglishininternationalcommunication,non-EnglishmajorcollegestudentsarefacinggreatchallengesinEnglishlearning.Thispaperaimstoinvestigatetheeffectofself-directedEnglishlearningamongnon-Englishmajorcollegestudents.Aquestionnairewasconductedamong100non-EnglishmajorcollegestudentsinChina,andtheresultsshowedthatstudentswhoengageinself-directedEnglishlearningtendtohavebetterEnglishproficiencyandlearningmotivationcomparedtothosewhorelysolelyonclassroomteaching.Moreover,studentswhouseavarietyoflearningresources,setlearninggoalsanddesigntheirlearningplaninasystematicway,tendtoachievebetterlearningoutcomes.Thisstudysuggeststhatself-directedEnglishlearningisaneffectivewayfornon-EnglishmajorcollegestudentstoimprovetheirEnglishproficiency. Introduction AsEnglishhasbecomeadominantlanguageintheworld,learningEnglishhasbecomeanecessaryskillforcollegestudents.However,non-EnglishmajorcollegestudentsfacegreatchallengesinEnglishlearningbecausetheyhavelimitedtime,resourcesandexposuretoEnglish.Moreover,traditionalteachingmethodsmaynotmeettheneedsofnon-Englishmajorcollegestudentsduetotheirdiverselearningstylesandlearninggoals.Therefore,self-directedEnglishlearninghasbecomeapopularalternativefornon-Englishmajorcollegestudents. Self-directedlearningreferstotheprocesswherestudentstaketheinitiativeandresponsibilityfortheirownlearning(Knowles,1975).Itallowsstudentstohavecontrolovertheirownlearningpace,strategyandoutcome.Self-directedlearningisespeciallyusefulfornon-EnglishmajorcollegestudentswhohavelimitedopportunitiestopracticeEnglishinanaturalcontext.Itenablesstudentstofocusontheirownneedsandinterests,andtodesigntheirlearningplaninaflexibleway.Moreover,self-directedlearningencouragesstudentstodeveloptheirlearningautonomyandcriticalthinkingskills.
