CentralizedandDecentralizedCorrectiveFeedback Centralizedcorrectivefeedbackisprovidedbytheinstructorinagroupsetting.Itcanbeintheformofexplicitcorrectionofgrammaticalandmechanicalerrors,orindirectcorrectionbyprovidingexamplesofcorrectusage.Decentralizedcorrectivefeedback,ontheotherhand,isgiventoindividualstudents.Thisfeedbackincludescommentsonthestrengthsandweaknessesofindividualpapers,aswellassuggestionsforimprovement. LiteratureReview Researchhassuggestedthatcorrectivefeedbackiseffectiveinimprovingstudents’writingskills.AstudybyEllisandShintani(2014)foundthatbothdirectandindirectcorrectivefeedbackimprovedwritingaccuracy.AnotherstudybyHuandLi(2014)foundthatstudentswhoreceivedcorrectivefeedbackshowedsignificantimprovementintheirwritingskills.Thesestudiesdidnotdistinguishbetweencentralizedanddecentralizedfeedback,however. Intermsofcentralizedversusdecentralizedfeedback,somestudieshavesuggestedthatdecentralizedfeedbackismoreeffectiveinimprovingstudents’writingskills.Forexample,astudybyFerris(2004)foundthatstudentswhoreceiveddecentralizedfeedbackmadesignificantlymoreprogressintheirgrammar,vocabulary,organization,anddevelopmentofideasthanthosewhoreceivedcentralizedfeedback.AnotherstudybyBitchenerandKnoch(2010)foundthatbothcentralizedanddecentralizedfeedbackimprovedstudents'writingtoasimilarextent,butdecentralizedfeedbackwasmoreeffectiveintermsofimprovingstudents’writingconfidence.
