Introduction Sincethenameofsubtitlesimplies,theyarewordsorphrasesdisplayedatthebottomofthescreenaccompanyingthevisualcontentoffilms,televisionshows,andvideos.Theirroleistoprovideatranslationofthespokenorwrittenlanguageofaudioandvisualcontent.Thesubtitletranslationischallengedbymanyfactorssuchastargetaudience’scognitivelevel,targetculture,andeventhevisualandauditorycontext.Amongthesefactors,metaphorisoneofthemostchallengingandintriguingaspectsofsubtitletranslation.Metaphorsconveyadeepermeaningbeyondliteralinterpretation,andtheyareoftendeeplyrootedintheirsourceculture,whichmakesitdifficultfortranslatorstoconveytheirintendedsense. Thisessayisaimedatinvestigatingthecognitivetranslationstrategiesusedbytranslatorswhentranslatingmetaphorsinfilmandtelevisionsubtitles.Byexploringthecognitivefactorsthatmayinfluencetheinterpretationprocessofmetaphorsinsubtitles,thisresearchaimstogiveinsightsintohowtotranslatemetaphorsinawaythatisaccuratetotheoriginalmeaning,culturallyappropriate,andisadaptedtothecognitivelevelofthetargetaudience.
