基于语料库的中国大学生英语作文中介词on和in的研究 Introduction PrepositionsareanimportantpartoftheEnglishlanguagethathelpsinconnectingdifferentwordsinasentencetocreatemeaning.AmongthemostcommonlyusedprepositionsinEnglishwritingisthepreposition‘in’and‘on.’Thetwoprepositionsareverysignificant,especiallyinEnglishwriting.Forexample,inacademicwriting,theyareusedtoindicatelocation,time,andcondition.Thispaperaimstoinvestigatetheuseofprepositions‘in’and‘on’intheEnglishwritingofChineseuniversitystudents,withthemaingoalofidentifyingthecommonerrorsandthemostfrequentcontextsofuse. RelatedLiterature Manyresearchershavepreviouslyinvestigatedtheuseofprepositionsindifferentlanguagecontexts.Forexample,SchaeferandCarlisle(2006)conductedastudyontheacquisitionofprepositionsbyEnglishlanguagelearners.TheirstudyrevealedthatEnglishlanguagelearnersfacechallengesinusingprepositionsinEnglishcorrectly.Moreover,FraserandShih(1997)pointedoutthatprepositionsareareasofdifficultyforChineselearnersofEnglish.TheyidentifiedthatthemajorproblemthatChineselearnersexperienceisthetranslationofprepositionsfromChinesetoEnglish. Ontheotherhand,astudybyZhang(2020)ontheuseofinandonbyChineseEFLlearnersfoundthatmostoftheparticipantsused‘inandon’interchangeably.ThestudyfurtherfoundthatthemostsignificantmistakemadebytheChineseEFLlearnerswastheuseofthepreposition‘in’insteadof‘on’whentalkingaboutthesurfaceofanobject.Additionally,otherstudiesrevealedthatsecondlanguagelearnerstendtoovergeneralizetheuseofinandonprepositionsinspecificcontexts(Gussenhovenetal.,2012;Yang,2018). Methodology Thecurrentstudyusesacorpusof100EnglishessayswrittenbyChineseuniversitystudents.Theparticipantswereselectedfrombothundergraduateandpostgraduatelevels,andtheiressaysfocusedonvarioustopics,includingculture,media,education,andscience.ThecorpuswascollectedfromtwouniversitiesinChina.TheparticipantswereadvancedlearnersofEnglish,whohadstudiedthelanguageformorethansixyearsinaclassroomsetting.
