《鲁迅小说选》英译本中习语翻译补偿研究——以杨宪益、戴乃迭译本为例 Introduction LuXunisapivotalfigureinmodernChineseliterature,whosewritingisknownforitsrealismandsocialcritique.Hisworksarebothnationalisticanduniversalinscope,andtheyhavebeentranslatedintonumerouslanguages.OneofthechallengesthattranslatorsfacewhentranslatingLuXun’sworksistoconveythelinguisticnuances,culturalconnotations,andidiomaticexpressionsthatarecentraltohiswriting.ThispaperexaminesthecompensationstrategiesusedbyYangXianyiandGladysYang,aswellasDavidHawkesandJohnMinfordintranslatingtheidiomaticexpressionsinLuXun’sselectedworks. Background TheLuXunLiteraryPrize,namedafterthefamousChinesewriter,isoneofthehighestliteraryhonorsinChina.Itwasfirstawardedin1995andisgiveneverythreeyearsforoutstandingworksofliteraturewritteninChinese.OneofthemostimportantauthoritativeeditionsofLuXun’sworksistheSelectedWorksofLuXun,whichincludesshortstories,prose,essays,andcriticalarticles.Ithasbeentranslatedintomultiplelanguages,includingEnglish.AmongthetranslationsofLuXun’sworksintoEnglish,thetwomostsignificantversionsarethoseofYangXianyiandGladysYang,andDavidHawkesandJohnMinford.BothtranslationsattempttoconveythemeaningofLuXun’sworkswhilepreservingtheoriginalstyle,tone,andculturalcontext. Methodology ThisresearchisaqualitativestudythatanalyzesthecompensationstrategiesusedtotranslateidiomaticexpressionsinYangandYang’sandHawkesandMinford’stranslationsofLuXun’sselectedworks.ThestudybeginswiththeidentificationofidiomaticexpressionsintheChineseoriginalthathavenodirectEnglishequivalent.Then,theEnglishtranslationsoftheseidiomaticexpressionsarecomparedtoidentifythecompensationstrategiesusedbythetranslators.Finally,theeffectivenessofthesestrategiesisevaluatedbasedontheaccuracyandappropriatenessofthetranslation.
