LiteratureReview: Previousresearchintoshellnounshasfocusedontheirsyntacticfeatures,suchasfrequency,length,andnouncollocates.However,therehasbeenlimitedresearchintotherolethatshellnounsplayinacademicwritingandtheirpotentialimpactonthereader'sperceptionofthewriter'sstance. AccordingtoHyland(2005),shellnounsareoftenusedinacademicwritingtoconstructanimpersonal,objectivetone.Byusingthesenouns,writerscandistancethemselvesfromthetopicandpresentinformationinamoreneutralanddetachedway.However,thisapproachcanalsobeseenaslimiting,asitdoesnotallowthewritertoexpresstheiropinionorstanceonthetopicbeingdiscussed. Incontrast,otherscholarshavearguedthatshellnounscanbeusedstrategicallytoindicatethewriter'sstancetowardsthetopic.Forexample,SwalesandFeak(2012)suggestthattheuseofcertainshellnouns,suchas'challenge','critique',and'reconsider',canconveythewriter'sintentiontoquestionorchallengeexistingideas.
