Stanceadverbsareusedtoindicatethedegreeofcertaintyoruncertaintyabouttheideaspresentedinwriting.Theyareusedtoexpressawriter'sattitudetowardsaparticulartopicortoindicateagreementordisagreementwithanotherwriter'sidea.Inacademicwriting,itisimportanttousestanceadverbseffectivelytoprovideaclearandconciseargument. ThisstudyaimstoexploretheuseofstanceadverbsinacademicEnglishwritingbylearners.Theresearchquestionsareasfollows: 1.WhatarethemostcommonstanceadverbsusedbylearnersinacademicEnglishwriting? 2.Howeffectivearelearnersinusingstanceadverbstoconveytheirideas? 3.Howdotheuseofstanceadverbsdifferbetweennativeandnon-nativeEnglishwriters? LiteratureReview Stanceadverbshavebeenwidelystudiedinlinguisticsanddiscourseanalysis.Inacademicwriting,theuseofstanceadverbsisconsideredtobeanimportantaspectofexpressingawriter'sattitudetowardsaparticulartopic.AstudybyHyland(2009)foundthatstanceadverbsareusedmorefrequentlyinacademicwritingthananyothertypeofadverbs. Hyland(2009)alsofoundthatthemostcommonstanceadverbsusedinacademicwritingare'clearly'and'obviously'.Theseadverbsareusedtoindicateahighdegreeofcertaintyintheideaspresented.Othercommonstanceadverbsare'possibly'and'probably',whichareusedtoindicateadegreeofuncertainty. Theuseofstanceadverbsbynon-nativeEnglishwritershasalsobeenstudied.AstudybyAzimioaraandBonaciu(2013)foundthatnon-nativeEnglishwriterstendtousefewerstanceadverbsthannativeEnglishwriters.Thisisbecausenon-nativeEnglishwritersmaylackconfidenceinexpressingtheiropinioninaforeignlanguage.
