Methodology: Thestudyusedamixed-methodsdesign,includingavocabularytest,areadingtask,andapost-readinginterview.Thevocabularytestwasusedtomeasuretheparticipants'vocabularysize,vocabularydepth,andvocabularyknowledge.Thereadingtaskaskedparticipantstoreadanacademictextandidentifyunfamiliarwords.Thepost-readinginterviewwasusedtoinvestigateparticipants'awarenessoftheunfamiliarwordstheyencounteredwhilereading. Participants: Theparticipantsinthisstudywere50EnglishmajorsfromauniversityinChina,ranginginagefrom18to22.TheywereallattheintermediatelevelofEnglishproficiencybasedontheirplacementtestscores. Results: Theresultsshowedthattheparticipants'languageproficiency,vocabularysize,vocabularydepth,andvocabularyknowledgewerepositivelycorrelatedwiththeirabilitytoacquirenewvocabularyincidentallywhilereading.Higherlanguageproficiencyfacilitatedfasterprocessingofwrittenlanguageandawiderrangeofcomprehensionstrategies.Greatervocabularysizeanddepthincreasedthelikelihoodofencounteringandrecognizingunknownwords,whilegreatervocabularyknowledgefacilitatedretrievalofwordmeaningfrommemory.However,thestudyalsofoundthateventhoughparticipantshadencounteredunfamiliarwordswhilereading,theymightnotnecessarilybecomeawareofthemunlesstheunfamiliarwordsdisruptedtheirunderstandingofthetext.
