Researchquestions: 1.Doesthediscoursetype(e.g.narrative,informational)haveasignificanteffectonincidentalvocabularyacquisition? 2.Doesthereadingtask(e.g.comprehensionquestions,freerecall)haveasignificanteffectonincidentalvocabularyacquisition? Methods: Participants:Thestudywillinvolve60undergraduateEnglishmajors(30males,30females)fromauniversityinChina. Design:Thestudywillusea2x2factorialdesign,withdiscoursetypeandreadingtaskastheindependentvariables,andvocabularyacquisitionasthedependentvariable. Procedure:Participantswillbedividedintofourgroups,eachgivenadifferentcombinationofdiscoursetypeandreadingtask.Thediscoursetypeswillbeanarrativeandaninformationaltext,andthereadingtaskswillbecomprehensionquestionsandfreerecall.Participantswillreadatextfor20minutesandbeaskedtocompleteapost-testwhichmeasurestheirincidentalvocabularyacquisition. Dataanalysis:DatawillbeanalyzedusingANOVAtodetermineifthereareanysignificanteffectsofdiscoursetypeandreadingtaskonincidentalvocabularyacquisition.Post-hoctestswillbeconductedifsignificanteffectsarefound. Expectedoutcomes: ItisexpectedthattheresultsofthisstudywillprovideinsightintotheimpactofdiscoursetypeandreadingtaskonincidentalvocabularyacquisitionamongEnglishmajors.Thefindingsmayhaveimplicationsforlanguageteachingandlearning,astheymayhelpeducatorsoptimizelanguagelearningactivitiesandmaterials.
