Requiredclassattendanceissocommonatcollegesanduniversitiesthatmanyteachersandevenstudentsthemselvessimplyassumeitisagoodthing.Infact,requiredclassattendancedoesmoreharmthangood. Thereareseveralreasonsthatteachersshouldnotrequireattendance.First,rigidattendancepoliciesdonotbenefitstudents'studies.Forexample,astudentmayhavetogiveupalecturewhichhefindsimportanttohisstudiessimplybecauseofrigidattendancepolicies.Second,thelecturesofsometeachersarenotalwaysconstructive.Astudentshouldbeallowedtodecideforhimselfwhetheranin-classexperienceisworthwhilewhenhisteachermerelyrepeatsmaterialfromthetextbookorwastesclasstimebytellingirrelevantstories.Finallyandmostimportantly,thereisnoprovencorrelationbetweenattendanceandperformanceinacourse.Astudentmaynevermissasingleattendanceinacourse,butitdoesn'tmeanthathehasacquiredtheknowledgeofthiscourse.
