Introduction: Inrecentyears,withtheimplementationofthenewcurriculumstandardsinEnglish,promotingstudents'independentlearningabilitieshasbecomeakeyfocusinhighschooleducation.Independentlearningisavitalskillforstudentstodevelop,enablingthemtotakeresponsibilityfortheirownlearningandtocontinuelearningbeyondtheconfinesoftheclassroom.Thisstudyaimstoinvestigatethecurrentstateofindependentlearningabilitiesamonghighschoolstudentsandexploretheimpactofthenewcurriculumstandardsinpromotingindependentlearning. Methods: Togatherrelevantdata,amixed-methodsapproachwasadopted,encompassingsurveys,interviews,andclassroomobservations.Thesurveywasdistributedtoasampleofhighschoolstudents,whileinterviewswereconductedwithbothstudentsandteachers.Classroomobservationswerecarriedouttoobserveandanalyzestudents'independentlearningbehaviorsandstrategies. Results: Theresultsofthesurveyrevealedthatasignificantmajorityofhighschoolstudentsareawareoftheimportanceofindependentlearningandrecognizeitsbenefits.However,thereisagapbetweenthisawarenessandtheactualimplementationofindependentlearningstrategies.Manystudentsstillheavilyrelyonteacherguidanceandlacktheinitiativetotakechargeoftheirownlearningprocess.
