SonarImaging Sonarimagingsystemsusesoundwavestoinvestigateunderwaterenvironmentsandcollectdata.Underwatersonarimagingsystemscanbroadlybeclassifiedintotwotypes:activeandpassive.Activesonarsystemsemitsoundwavesandmeasurethetimetakenforthesignalstoreturnafterreflectingoffobjectsinthewater.Passivesonarsystems,ontheotherhand,pickupsoundscreatedbyunderwaterobjectsandnoisefromtheenvironment. Activesonarsystemsareusedtocreatesonarimages.Theprocessworksbytransmittingapulseofsoundwavesintothewater,whichhitsomeobjectandbouncebacktothesonarsystem.Thesonarsystemthenreceivesthereflectedwavesandmeasurestheamountoftimetakenforthepulsetoreturn.Thegeographyoftheseabed,underwaterstructures,andotherobjectsinthewateraffectthereturntimeofthepulse.Passivesonarsystemsareusedtodetectandlocalizeunderwatersourcesofnoise.Passivesystemsareusedfordetectingsubmarines,searchingforlostobjects,andinscientificresearch.
