Theoreticalbackground Memetics,atermcoinedbyRichardDawkinsin1976,referstothestudyofculturaltransmissionandevolutionofideas,behaviors,andtechnologicalartifactsthroughimitation,whichisalsoknownasmemereplication(Blackmore,1999).Memesareunitsofculturaltransmissionthatcanspreadthroughindividuals.Theyareseenasculturalanaloguestogenesastheyreplicate,mutate,andcompetewithothermemesfortheirsurvivalandpropagationinhumanculture. Memeticstheoryarguesthatculturaltransmissionisnotonlyinfluencedbyhumanselection,butalsooccursthroughindividuallearningfromimitation,whichisafundamentalandessentialconceptforEnglishlanguageteachingandlearning.Giventheimportantroleofimitationinlanguageacquisition,memorizationcanbeafoundationalapproach,asitcanassiststudentsinretainingtheinformationtheylearn,especiallyinimprovingtheirretentionoflinguisticform,styleandvocabulary.
