Astudymonitor,orclinicalmonitor,isresponsibleforensuringthatstudysitesarefollowingthestudyprotocol,andthatthequalityofthedatacollectedisreliable.Themonitorisalsoresponsibleforidentifyingandresolvingissuesthatmayariseduringthecourseofthetrial.
Thefrequencyofstudymonitoringandthemonitoringmethodswillvarydependingonthestudyprotocol,thenumberofstudysites,andotherstudy-specificfactors.Generally,monitoringisconductedperiodicallythroughoutthetrial,withthefrequencyincreasinginthelaterstagesofthetrial.
Studymonitoringmaybeconductedinavarietyofways,including:
-On-sitemonitoring:Studymonitorsvisitthestudysitetoreviewthestudydataandrecords,andtoverifythattheprotocolisbeingfollowedproperly.
-Remotemonitoring:Studymonitorsaccessthestudydataandrecordsremotely,usingelectronicdatacapturesystemsandothertechnologytoreviewandverifythedata.
-Sourcedataverification:Studymonitorsreviewthesourcedocumentsusedtocollectthestudydata,ensuringthatallofthedataisaccurateandcomplete.
-Risk-basedmonitoring:Monitoringisfocusedonareasofgreatestrisktopatientsafetyanddataquality,asidentifiedduringtheriskassessmentprocess.
Thegoalsofstudymonitoringincludeensuringthatthestudyisconductedincompliancewithregulatoryrequirementsandthestudyprotocol,identifyingandaddressingissuesthatmayariseduringthecourseofthetrial,andensuringtheintegrityofthestudydata.
