Background Vocabularyknowledgeisconsideredafundamentalelementinlanguageproficiency.Itplaysacrucialroleinreading,listening,speaking,andwritingskills.Readingisoneofthemostcommonwaysforlearnerstoacquirenewvocabulary.However,notallreadingtaskshavethesameeffectonvocabularyacquisitionandretention,asdifferenttaskshavedifferentcharacteristicsintermsoftexttype,readingpurpose,andtextdifficulty. Itiswidelyrecognizedthatextensivereading,suchasreadingforpleasure,hasapositiveimpactonvocabularyacquisitionandretention.Thisisbecauselearnersareexposedtoalargeamountofnewwordsincontext,whichenhancestheirabilitytoguessthemeaningofunfamiliarwords. However,extensivereadingalonemaynotbesufficientforhighschoolstudents,whomayneedtoreadtextsforspecificpurposessuchasacademicstudiesorexams.Inthesesituations,thefocusisnotonlyoncomprehensionbutalsoonspecificcontentandvocabulary.Consequently,differentreadingtasksmayhavedifferentimpactsonvocabularyacquisitionandretention. ResearchQuestions Thisstudyaimstoaddressthefollowingresearchquestions: 1.Whatistheimpactofextensivereadingonvocabularyacquisitionandretentionofhighschoolstudents? 2.Whatistheimpactofreadingtaskswithspecificvocabularyfocusonvocabularyacquisitionandretentionofhighschoolstudents? Methodology Participants:TheparticipantsinthisstudywillbehighschoolstudentsfromGrades10-12. ResearchDesign:Thestudywillusepre-test/post-testdesignwithtwogroups.Thefirstgroupwillengageinextensivereadingtasks,whilethesecondgroupwillperformreadingtaskswithspecificvocabularyfocus.
