功能语法视角下《论语》三个英译本的比较研究 Introduction TheAnalectsofConfucius,alsoknownastheLunYu,isoneofthemostimportanttextsinChinesehistoryandculture.ItisacollectionofsayingsandteachingsattributedtoConfuciusandhisdisciples,whichbecameaprimarysourceofConfucianism,aschoolofthoughtthathasinfluencedChinesesocietyforover2,000years.Assuch,theAnalectshavebeentranslatedintovariouslanguages,includingEnglish,tomakethemaccessibletoscholarsandreadersoutsideofChina.Inthispaper,wewillcomparethreeEnglishtranslationsoftheAnalects-thosebyJamesLegge,ArthurWaley,andD.C.Lau-fromtheperspectiveoffunctionalgrammar. FunctionalGrammar Functionalgrammarisanapproachtolanguageanalysisthatviewslanguageasasystemofcommunication,ratherthanasetofrulestobefollowed.Accordingtothisperspective,languageisusedtoexpressmeaningsandcommunicatemessages,anditsstructureandorganizationreflectthecommunicativefunctionitserves.Infunctionalgrammar,thefocusisontherelationshipbetweenformandfunction,withtheaimofunderstandinghowlanguagestructuresareusedtoconveyspecificmeaningsindifferentcontexts. ComparisonofTranslations ThethreetranslatorsoftheAnalectswewillexamineinthispaperhavetakendifferentapproachestorenderingthetextintoEnglish.JamesLegge(1815-1897)wasaScottishscholarwhospentmuchofhislifeinChinastudyingChineseliteratureandculture.HistranslationoftheAnalects,publishedin1893,wasthefirstcompleteEnglishversionofthetextandremainsaclassicofWesternSinology. ArthurWaley(1889-1966)wasaBritishsinologistwhomadesignificantcontributionstothetranslationofChineseliteratureintoEnglish.HisrenditionoftheAnalects,publishedin1938,washighlypraisedforitsreadabilityandpoeticquality,althoughithasbeencriticizedforitslackofaccuracyandfidelitytotheoriginaltext. D.C.Lau(1915-2010)wasaHongKong-bornscholarwhospecializedinChineselanguageandliterature.HistranslationoftheAnalects,publishedin1979,aimedtoprovideafaithfulandaccurateversionofthetextthatwouldserveasareliablesourceforscholarsandstudentsofConfucianism.
