Systemfunctionalgrammarisalinguisticapproachthatemphasizesthefunctionoflanguageandcommunicationinthesocialcontext.Theapproachfocusesonthefunctionaluseoflanguageindifferentcontextsandthegrammaticalchoicesmadebyspeakerstoconveytheirmeaning.Inthispaper,translationsof“饮酒五首”areanalyzedfromasystemfunctionalgrammarperspectivetoexplorehowthetranslatorshaveconveyedthesamemeaningindifferentways. TranslationAnalysis ThefivedifferentEnglishtranslationsof“饮酒五首”byDuFuthatareanalyzedinthisstudyare: 1.FivePoemsofDrinkingWine(translatedbyWitterBynner) 2.FivePoemsinCelebrationofWine(translatedbyA.C.Graham) 3.FiveOdesonWine(translatedbyStephenOwen) 4.FiveVersesontheJoyofDrinking(translatedbyXuYuanchong) 5.FiveRhymesonaDrinkingBout(translatedbyJamesLegge) Allfivetranslationsareevaluatedonthebasisoffiveaspectsofsystemfunctionalgrammar:mood,transitivity,theme-rhemestructure,cohesion,andinformationexchangepatterns. Mood Moodreferstothegrammaticalmoodofasentence,whichindicatesthespeaker’sattitudetowardsacertaineventorsituation.Inallfivetranslations,thedominantmoodiscelebratory,indicatingthejoyandpleasureofdrinkingwine.Forexample,inLegge’stranslation,theopeninglinereads,“Wejoyinwineandthustheserhymesindite,”whileBynner’sversionbegins,“Wethree,wewhohavedrunktheclearwine.”Allfivetranslationsconveyafestivemood,althoughthedegreeofintensityandplayfulnessofthemoodvaries.
