Background Alternateinterpretingisatypeofinterpretingthatinvolvestwointerpretersworkingtogether.Theinterpreterstaketurnsinterpretingpassagesofspeech,allowingeachothertorestandrecoverwhiletheotherisworking.Alternateinterpretingisachallengingtaskthatrequiresahighlevelofcoordinationandteamwork. FluencyinEnglishoralproductionisanimportantskillforstudentsofalternateinterpreting.StudentsneedtobeabletospeakfluentlyinEnglishinordertoprovideaccurateandeffectiveinterpretingservices.Fluencymeansthatthespeakerisabletoproducespeechthatissmooth,effortless,anduninterrupted.StudentswhoarefluentinEnglishproducespeechthatisclear,natural,andeasytounderstand. LiteratureReview TherehasbeenrelativelylittleresearchonthedevelopmentoffluencyinEnglishoralproductionamongstudentsofalternateinterpreting.Mostoftheresearchoninterpretinghasfocusedontheaccuracyandqualityoftheinterpreting,ratherthanonthefluencyoftheinterpreters. However,thereissomeresearchthatsuggeststhatfluencyisanimportantfactorintheeffectivenessofinterpreting.Forexample,inastudyofsimultaneousinterpreting,LiuandWen(2018)foundthatfluentinterpretersweremoreaccurateandefficientthanlessfluentinterpreters.
