Background Code-switchingisacommonphenomenoninmultilingualsettings.Itinvolvesthealternationbetweentwoormorelanguagesorlanguagevarietieswithinasinglediscourseorconversation.InELTcontext,teacherscanusecode-switchingtofacilitatelearning,provideclarity,andbuildrapportwithlearnersfromdifferentlinguisticbackgrounds.Code-switchingcanalsobeusedtohighlightspecificfeaturesofthetargetlanguage,expandstudents’lexicalandsyntacticknowledge,andenhancelearnerengagementandparticipation. Therearetwomaintypesofcode-switchinginELT:intra-sententialandinter-sentential.Intra-sententialcode-switchingoccurswhenateacherswitchesbetweenlanguageswithinthesamesentenceorclause,whileinter-sententialcode-switchinginvolvesswitchinglanguagesbetweentwoormoresentencesordiscourseunits.Bothtypesofcode-switchingcanservedifferentpurposesandcanbeinfluencedbyvariousfactorssuchasthelanguageproficiencyoftheteacherandlearners,thesocioculturalnormsoftheclassroomsetting,andtheinstructionalobjectivesandgoals.
