TheuseofeuphemismsandindirectspeechinEnglishisparticularlyessentialinsituationswheresocialconventionsandculturalnormscallfortheuseofmorediplomaticlanguage.Situationslikeformalbusinessmeetings,publicspeeches,andnegotiationsrequireindividualstouselanguagethatisrespectfulandprofessional.Therefore,itbecomesnecessarytounderstandandusepolitenessstrategiesappropriately,whichisdifferentfromthemoredirectlanguageusedinnormalconversationbetweenclosefriendsorfamilymembers. AcommonexampleofaeuphemisminEnglishis'passaway'or'expire'insteadof'die.'Theseeuphemismsareusedtoconveythesamemessageofdeathbutconveyitwithmoresensitivityandtact.AnotherexampleofeuphemismsinEnglishisusing'plus-size'insteadof'overweight'or'obese.'Thisuseofeuphemismisevidenceofhowindividualsuselanguagetoconveypotentiallyuncomfortableorsensitivetopics.Employingsucheuphemismsallowsindividualstoconveythemessagetactfullywithoutcausingoffenceorpsychologicaldiscomforttothepersonlistening.
