GatesattendedpublicelementaryschoolbeforemovingontotheprivateLakesideSchoolinNorthSeattle.ItwasatLakesidethatGatesbeganhiscareerinpersonalcomputersoftware,programmingcomputersatage13. In1973,GatesenteredHarvardUniversityasafreshman,whereheliveddownthehallfromSteveBallmer,whoisnowMicrosoft'spresident.WhileatHarvard,GatesdevelopedaversionoftheprogramminglanguageBASICforthefirstmicrocomputer-theMITSAltair.BASICwasfirstdevelopedbyJohnKemenyandThomasKurtzatDartmouthCollegeinthemid-1960s.Inhisjunioryear,GatesdroppedoutofHarvardtodevotehisenergiesfull-timetoMicrosoft,acompanyhehadstartedin1975withhisboyhoodfriendPaulAllen.Guidedbyabeliefthatthepersonalcomputerwouldbeavaluabletooloneveryofficedesktopandineveryhome,theybegandevelopingsoftwareforpersonalcomputers. Gates'foresightandvisionregardingpersonalcomputinghavebeencentraltothesuccessofMicrosoftandthesoftwareindustry.GatesisactivelyinvolvedinkeymanagementandstrategicdecisionsatMicrosoft,andplaysanimportantroleinthetechnicaldevelopmentofnewproducts.MuchofhistimeisdevotedtomeetingwithcustomersandstayingincontactwithMicrosoftemployeesaroundtheworldthroughe-mail.
