Weheartheeconomyisdoingverywell,butthenumberofchildrenatriskgoesupallthetime.Whileprovincialandfederalbudgetsarebeingbalanced,childrencontinuetosuffer,perhapsmorethanbefore.AchildisreportedmissinginCanadaaboutevery9minutes,foratotalofmorethan56,000casesayear.Manyofthesechildrenleavetheirhomestoescapeabuse.Closetoamillionandahalf,or21%ofCanada'schildrenliveinpoverty,halfamillionmorethanin1989,whentheentireHouseofCommonsvotedtoendchildpovertybytheyear2000. Wewantcommunitiestocontributetothewell-beingofchildrenandyouth,butinsteadofsupportingformalandinformalserviceswecuttheirfunding.Recently,theNationalForumonHealth,theStandingCommitteeonHealthoftheHouseofCommons,HealthCanada,theNationalCrimePreventionCouncil,andtheCanadianAssociationofPublicHealth,tonamebutafew,affirmedtheimportanceofstrongcommunitiesforchildren'shealth.Theseclaimsareatoddswithprevailingpoliciesofsocialdisinvestment.
