TheparadeexampleoftheformerisJerome’sclaimthatatranslator’soptionsarefinally onlytwo:“word-for-word”or“sense-for-sense.”2Regardlessofwhetherheintendedto, JeromesettheentireconversationaboutBibletranslatingonacoursefromwhichit wouldnotdeviateformorethanfifteenhundredyears;andsomeobserversinthefieldof translationstudieshavecometoviewJerome’s“either/or”asanunhelpfulrutfrom whichthefieldhasbeguntoextricateitselfonlyrecentlyandwithdifficulty.
