Background Theconceptofpolitenessorhedginginlanguagehasbeenatopicofinterestinlinguisticresearchformanyyears.Ithasbeenfoundthatpolitenessisafundamentalaspectofhumaninteractionandisinfluencedbysituationalfactors,culture,socialnorms,andindividualcharacteristics(Brown&Levinson,1987).BasedonthetheoryofGrice’scooperativeprinciple,peopleusepoliteorhedginglanguagetoabidebytheprinciplesofcommunicationandtorecognizethefeelingsofothers.Politenessisespeciallyimportantincross-culturalcommunication,whereculturaldifferencesmayleadtomisunderstandingsandconflicts(Gao,2010). LiteratureReview Theconceptofhedgingorpolitenesshasbeenstudiedbymanyresearchersandscholars.AccordingtoBrownandLevinson’s(1987)politenesstheory,therearetwotypesofpoliteness,positivepolitenessandnegativepoliteness.Positivepolitenessisusedtoshowfriendlinessandempathywiththelistener,whilenegativepolitenessisusedtoavoidimposingonthelistener’ssocialspace.Thistheorysuggeststhatindividualsusepolitenessstrategiesbasedontheirsocialandculturalbackground,contextofthecommunication,theirrelationshipwiththelistener,andalsoontherecipient’spersonalitytraits.Besides,thedifferentlanguagestructuresandexpressionshavebeenexploredtostudytheuseofhedgingorpoliteness.Forexample,linguisticfeaturessuchasmodalauxiliaryverbs,tagquestions,hedges,andindirectspeechactshavebeenfoundtobeeffectiveinexpressingpolitenessinlanguage(Liu&Yao,2018).
