TheInteractiveHypothesis: TheInteractiveHypothesis,proposedbyRichardL.SparksandMartinGernsbacher,assertsthatlisteningskilldevelopmentisreliantonbothbottom-upandtop-downprocesses.Thebottom-upprocessinvolvesdecodingindividualsounds,words,andgrammaticalstructures,whilethetop-downprocessreliesonbackgroundknowledge,contextualunderstanding,andschematicknowledge.Thishypothesisemphasizestheinteractivenatureoflisteningandsuggeststhatthecombinationofthesetwoprocessesleadstosuccessfulcomprehension. Methodology: ToevaluatetheeffectivenessofEnglishlisteninginstructionbasedontheInteractiveHypothesis,amixed-methodsresearchapproachwillbeemployed.ThestudywillinvolveagroupofintermediateEnglishlearnersandemploybothqualitativeandquantitativedatacollectiontechniques.Theparticipantswillbedividedintotwogroups:anexperimentalgroupexposedtolisteningmaterialsandactivitiesdesignedbasedontheInteractiveHypothesis,andacontrolgroupfollowingtraditionallisteninginstructionmethods.
