中国英语学习者使用模糊限制语的研究 Introduction WiththeproliferationofEnglishlanguagearoundtheworldandanincreasingnumberofnon-nativespeakersofEnglishlearningandusingthelanguage,ithasbecomecrucialtostudythelinguisticfeaturesofnon-nativeEnglishandhowtheydifferfromthoseofnativeEnglish.Onesuchfeaturethathasattractedconsiderableattentioninrecentyearsistheuseofvaguerestrictionlanguage,suchasphraseslike‘sortof’,‘kindof’,‘moreorless’,etc.ThisstudyaimstoinvestigatetheuseofthesevaguerestrictionphrasesbyChineseESLlearnersandanalyzehowtheiruseoftheselanguagefeaturesdiffersfromthatofnativeEnglishspeakers. Background VaguerestrictionlanguageisalinguisticfeaturethatiscommonlyusedinconversationalEnglish.Itisusuallyusedtoexpressuncertainty,tentativeness,andvaguenessincommunication.AlthoughthistypeoflanguagefeatureiscommonlyusedbynativeEnglishspeakers,non-nativeEnglishspeakersmayfinditchallengingtounderstandwhenandhowtouseit.Thisisbecausetheirlinguisticandculturalbackgroundsmaynotallowthemtousevaguerestrictionlanguageeffectivelyandappropriately. PreviousstudieshavefoundthatESLlearnerstendtooverusevaguerestrictionlanguageinEnglishcommunication,especiallywhentheyarenotconfidentabouttheircommunicationskillsorwhentheywanttosoundpoliteandhumble.ThesestudieshavealsofoundthatthefrequencyandtypeofvaguerestrictionlanguageusedbyESLlearnersvarydependingontheirlinguisticandculturalbackgrounds,andthecontextinwhichtheyarecommunicating. ResearchQuestions Theresearchquestionsforthisstudyareasfollows: 1.WhattypesofvaguerestrictionlanguagedoChineseESLlearnersuseinEnglishcommunication? 2.HowdothefrequencyandtypeofvaguerestrictionlanguageusedbyChineseESLlearnersdifferfromthoseusedbynativeEnglishspeakers? Methodology Thisstudywilluseamixed-methodsapproachtoinvestigatetheuseofvaguerestrictionlanguagebyChineseESLlearners.Datawillbecollectedthroughsurveys,interviews,andanalysisofwrittenandspokencommunication.Theparticipantsforthisstudywillinclude50ChineseESLlearnersand50nativeEnglishspeakers.
