By1804,EnglishaswellasAmericaninventorshadexperimentedwithsteamenginesformovinglandvehicles.In1920,JohnStevensranalocomotiveandcarsaroundinacirculartrackonhisNewJerseyestate,whichthepublicsawasanamusingtoy.Andin1825,afteropeningashortlengthoftrack,theStocktontoDarlingtonRailroadinEnglandbecamethefirstlinetocarrygeneraltraffic.Americanbusinesspeople,especiallythoseintheAtlanticcoastalregionwholookedforbettercommunicationwiththeWest,quicklybecameinterestedintheEnglishexperiment.ThefirstcompanyinAmericatobeginactualoperationswastheBaltimoreandOhio,whichopenedathirteen-milelengthoftrackin1830.Itusedateamofhorsestopullatrainofpassengercarriagesandfreightwagonsalongthetrack.Steamlocomotivepowerdidn’tcomeintoregularserviceuntiltwoyearslater.
