TheCurrentStateofEnglishTeachinginHigherEducation OneofthemostsignificantchallengesofteachingEnglishinhighereducationisdeterminingtheappropriatelevelofinstructionforagivenstudent.Englishproficiencyvarieswidelyamongnon-nativespeakers,andeducatorsmusttailortheirinstructiontotheneedsandabilitiesofeachstudentinordertobeeffective.Inadditiontothischallenge,manystudentsfacedifficultiesinadaptingtoanewcultureandacademicenvironment,whichcanmakeitchallengingforthemtodeveloptheirEnglishlanguageskills. Tohelpovercomethesechallenges,manyuniversitieshaveimplementedprogramsorcoursesspecificallydesignedtohelpnon-nativespeakersimprovetheirEnglishlanguageskills.Theseprogramsmayincludeclassesingrammar,listeningcomprehension,andspeaking,aswellasaccesstotutorsandotherresourcestohelpstudentsdeveloptheirlanguageskills. Inadditiontolanguageskills,manyuniversitiesalsofocusonteachingacademicEnglish,whichencompassesthespecializedvocabulary,grammar,andconventionsusedintheacademicenvironment.Thisincludescitingsources,understandingresearch,andwritingresearchpapersordissertations.Thesecoursesareessentialfornon-nativespeakers,astheyprovidethenecessarylanguageskillsandknowledgetosucceedinhighereducation.
