浅析英语语音教学中的nl发音错误 Introduction: ThepronunciationofEnglishasasecondlanguage(ESL)learnershasalwaysbeenasubjectofconcerninlanguageteachingandlearningcircles.AmongothercommonpronunciationchallengesfacedbyESLlearners,thenlsoundsyndromehasbeenoneofthemostpersistentandfrustratingones.However,evenwiththeadvancementofphonologyresearchandotherstudiesonpronunciation,littleunderstandinghasbeenattainedofthefactorsorreasonsbehindthisproblem.Thisarticleexploresthistopicbylookingatvariousscholarlyworksonthenlsoundsyndrome,itscommoncharacteristics,andsuggestedsolutions. CommonCharacteristicsofnlSoundSyndrome: Thenlsoundisacombinationoftwosoundsthatderivefromthenasalsectionoftheoralcavity.Asnotedbyseveralscholars,itspronunciationdemandsthevibrationofthevocalcordswhileairisforcedthroughthenasalcavity.Learnerswithnlsoundsyndromeconsistentlymispronouncethissound.Theirspeechisoftencharacterizedbyamisspellingorreplacementofnlwithotherphonemes,suchasno,lo,andl.Theseerrorsresultfromthedifficultyinproducingsuchacomplexsound,especiallyforspeakerswhosenativelanguageslackasimilarsound. FactorsContributingtonlSoundSyndrome: Acriticalreviewofseveralphonologystudies,coupledwithobservationsfromteachingpractice,indicatethattherearemanyfactorsthatmaybecontributingtothenlsoundsyndrome.Oneofthecommonreasonsisthelackofexplicitinstructiononthesoundbytheteacherandtheabsenceofadequatepracticeopportunities.Secondly,researchsuggeststhattheminimalcontrastseenbetweenLandNLphonemesinEnglishmayhavesomethingtodowiththisphenomenon.Thismeansthatevenwhenlearnerscanhearanddifferentiatethetwosounds,theymaystillsubstitutethem,giventheminimaldifferenceinmeaning.Finally,scholarshavealsonotedthat,insomecases,theinabilitytoproducethenlsoundispsychologicallyrooted,basedonnegativeattitudestowardsthesoundoralackofmotivationtofixtheproblem. SuggestedSolutions: Basedontheaboveobservations,severalpotentialremedieshavebeensuggestedbyscholarstoaddressthenlsoundsyndromeinESLlearners.Firstly,explicitteachingofthesoundshouldbeprovided
