StatementoftheNewMeanValueTheorem: Letf(x)beafunctiondefinedonanopeninterval(a,b)anddifferentiablewithinthatinterval.Thenthereexistsatleastonepointc,suchthatf'(c)=(f(b)-f(a))/(b-a). ProofandInterpretation: TheproofofthenewmeanvaluetheoremisanextensionofRolle'stheoremandcanbeeasilyderivedfromit.ByapplyingRolle'stheoremtothefunctiong(x)=f(x)-kx,wherekisaconstantchosensuchthatg(a)=g(b),wecanestablishtheexistenceofapointcwithintheinterval(a,b)satisfyingf'(c)=(f(b)-f(a))/(b-a).Intuitively,thismeansthatthereexistsapointwithintheintervalwheretheinstantaneousrateofchangeisequaltotheaveragerateofchangeovertheinterval.
