Onesuchmethodinvolvestheuseofdifferentcatalysts,suchasp-toluenesulfonicacid,zeolites,andmetaloxides.Thesecatalystspromotetheselectiveformationofthedesiredproductandincreasethereactionrate.Forexample,theuseofp-toluenesulfonicacidasacatalystshowedasignificantimprovementintheyieldandselectivityofω-formylthymolcomparedtotheoriginalmethod.Additionally,zeolitessuchasH-BEAandH-MORsupportedonSiO2hasbeenfoundtoenhancetheyieldoftheproductupto90%undermicrowaveirradiation.
