Introduction: Food-borneillnessesareamajorconcernworldwide,posingasignificantthreattopublichealthandsafety.Theseillnessesaremainlycausedbythepresenceofmicroorganismssuchasbacteria,viruses,andfungiinfood.Inrecentyears,therehasbeenanincreasingtrendtowardstheuseofnaturalantimicrobialsinfoodpackagingmaterialstoextendtheshelflifeoffoodproductsandreducetheriskoffood-borneillnesses.Onesuchagentisessentialoils,whichpossessantimicrobialpropertiesandhavebeenshowntobeeffectiveagainstvariousmicroorganisms. Chitosanisanaturalbiopolymerthathasbeenextensivelystudiedforitsantibacterialproperties.Itisderivedfromchitin,whichisthesecondmostabundantbiopolymeraftercellulose.Chitosanhasbeenusedinthefoodpackagingindustryduetoitsbiodegradabilityandbiocompatibility.However,chitosanalonehaslimitedantibacterialactivityagainstcertainmicroorganisms. Polyethyleneisawidelyusedpackagingmaterialduetoitslowcost,easeofprocessing,andgoodmechanicalproperties.However,itdoesnothaveanyinherentantibacterialproperties. Lemonessentialoilisanaturalplantextractthathasbeenshowntopossessstrongantibacterialactivityagainstvariousmicroorganisms.Itiscomposedofvariouscomponents,includinglimonene,β-pinene,andγ-terpinene.
