HistoricalContext: Singapore'slinguisticlandscapehasbeenshapedbynumerouswavesofcolonizationandimmigration.TheBritishcolonizationinthe19thandearly20thcenturieslaidthefoundationfortheuseofEnglishasanofficiallanguage.However,theinfluxofimmigrantsfromdiverselinguisticbackgrounds,includingChinese,Malay,Indian,andvariousdialect-speakingcommunities,hasgreatlyinfluencedthedevelopmentofSE. FeaturesofSingaporeEnglish: SEhasdistinguishingcharacteristicsthatsetitapartfromotherformsofEnglish.Onesignificantfeatureisthepresenceofsubstratuminfluences,wherethenativelanguagesofdifferentethniccommunitiesinSingaporehaveinfluencedvocabulary,syntax,andpronunciation.Forexample,Singlish,acolloquialformofSE,incorporateswordsandphrasesfromMalay,Chinese,Tamil,andvariousChinesedialects.
