ABSTRACT Titleofdissertation:ENABLINGDYNAMICSPECTRUM ALLOCATIONINCOGNITIVERADIO NETWORKS YuanYuan,DoctorofPhilosophy,2007 Dissertationdirectedby:AssociateProfessorWilliamA.Arbaugh, DepartmentofComputerScience ProfessorAgrawalaAshok, DepartmentofComputerScience Thelastdecadehaswitnessedtheproliferationofinnovativewirelesstechnologies, suchasWi-Fi,wirelessmeshnetworks,operatinginunlicensedbands.Duetotheincreas- ingpopularityandthewidedeploymentsofthesetechnologies,theunlicensedbands becomeovercrowded.Thewirelessdevicesoperatinginthesebandsinterferewitheach otherandhurttheoverallperformance.Tosupportfastgrowthsofwirelesstechnologies, morespectrumsarerequired.However,asmost“prime”spectrumhasbeenallocated, thereisnospectrumavailabletoexpandtheseinnovativewirelessservices.Despitethe generalperceptionthatthereisanactualspectralshortage,therecentmeasurementre- sultsreleasedbytheFCC(FederalCommunicationsCommission)showthatonaverage only5%ofthespectrumfrom30MHzto30GHzisusedintheUS.Thisindicatesthatthe inefficientspectrumusageistherootcauseofthespectralshortageproblem.Therefore, thisdissertationisfocusedonimprovingspectrumutilizationandefficiencyintackling thespectralshortageproblemtosupportever-growinguserdemandsforwirelessappli- cations. Thisdissertationproposesanovelconceptofdynamicspectrumallocation,which adaptivelydividesavailablespectrumintonon-overlappingfrequencysegmentsofdif- ferentbandwidthconsideringthenumberofpotentiallyinterferingtransmissionsandthe distributionoftrafficloadinalocalenvironment.Thegoalsare(1)tomaximizespectrum efficiencybyincreasingparalleltransmissionsandreducingco-channelinterferences,and (2)toimprovefairnessacrossanetworkbybalancingspectrumassignments.Sinceex- istingradiosystemsofferverylimitedflexibility,cognitiveradios,whichcansenseand adapttoradioenvironments,areexploitedtosupportsuchadynamicconcept.
