ABSTRACTTitleofDissertation:THEIMPACTOFBACKGROUNDANDEXPERIENCEONSOFTWAREINSPECTIONS.JeffreyClarkCarverDoctorofPhilosophy2003Dissertationdirectedby:ProfessorVictorBasiliDepartmentofComputerScienceThisdissertationisaninitialstudyintotherelationshipbetweenaninspector’scharacteristicsandhisorhereffectivenessinaninspection.Researchhasshownthatimprovingtheindividualeffectivenessoftheinspectorsimprovestheoveralleffectivenessofaninspectionteam.Buttheperformanceofinspectorsvarieswidelyevenwhenusingthesameinspectiontechnique.Thisvariationisoftenduetotheinherentdifferencesamongtheinspectorswhousedthetechnique.Inordertobetterunderstandthisvariationandprovideguidancetoinspectionplannersthisdissertationhasfocusedonthebackgroundandexperienceoftheinspectorasthesourceofvariation.TostudythisissueIusedanovelapproachforsoftwareengineeringgroundedtheory.Thismethodologyallowedhypothesestobebuiltbothtop-downfromtheliteratureaswellasbottom-upusingdata.Theliteratureportioncamefromsoftwareengineeringaswellaseducationandpsychology.Thedataportioncamefrombothexistingstudiesandnewlydesignedstudies.Thedatafromexistingstudiesallowedtheinitialhypothesestobecomemoreconcrete.Oncesomeofthehypotheseshadsupportfromdatathefinalstepwastodesignstudiestotestasubsetofthehypotheses.Idesignedandrantwostudiestotesttheselectedhypotheses.Thegoalofthefirststudywastounderstandthetypeandlevelofexperiencewiththesoftwareinspectionprocessthatwasnecessary.Theearlierdataha
