TheoreticalBasis Memoryisanessentialcognitivefunctionassociatedwithlearningandcareerdevelopment.Accordingtothecognitivetheory,memorizationisthefirststepinthelearningprocess,occurringwithintheshort-termmemorysystem.Iftheinformationisrepeatedorpracticed,itwilltransfertolong-termmemory,whichisessentialforlanguagelearningandacquisition(Baddeley,2012). Memorizationhasbeenwidelystudiedinlanguagelearningliteraturesinceitisacommonpracticeforlanguagelearners.AsforEnglishwritingability,astrongshort-termmemoryisessentialforstoringandprocessinginformationthatenablesthecreationofcoherentandwell-structuredwriting(Swain&Lapkin,2000).Additionally,memorizingEnglisharticlescanenhancethestudents'Englishproficiency,includinggrammar,vocabulary,andsentencestructure,therebycontributingtotheimprovementoftheiroverallEnglishwritingability(Meng,2013). EmpiricalStudiesonMemorizationPractice Manystudieshavelookedintothepracticaleffectofmemorizationonhighschoolstudents'Englishwritingability.Forexample,aresearchconductedbyLi(2014)foundthatmemorizationofEnglisharticlesisaneffectivemethodofimprovingEnglishwritingproficiency,especiallyingrammar,vocabulary,andsentencestructure.ThestudyinvolvedagroupofChinesehighschoolstudentswhoweredividedintotwogroups:onegroupwasassignedtoreadandmemorizeEnglisharticles,whiletheothergroupwasassignedtoreadoriginalEnglisharticles.Theresultsshowedthatthememorizationgroupperformedbetterinthepost-testintermsofgrammaraccuracy,vocabularyuse,andsentencestructure.
