Background Phonologicalawarenessreferstotheabilitytorecognizeandmanipulatethesoundstructureofwords,includingsyllables,phonemes,andrhymes.Accordingtoresearch,thedevelopmentofphonologicalawarenesshasbeenlinkedtosuccessinreading,writing,andspellingskills(Wagner,Torgesen,&Rashotte,1994).Moreover,studieshavefoundthatphonologicalawarenessisanimportantpredictorofreadingskillsforbothnativeandnon-nativeEnglishspeakers(Goswami,2002). Vocabularyknowledgeisalsoconsideredasanimportantfactorinreadingdevelopment.Vocabularycomprisesallthewordsthatindividualsunderstandanduse,anditisessentialforcomprehensionandcommunication.Studieshaveshownthatindividualswithawiderangeofvocabularyknowledgearebetterabletounderstandwrittentextsandperformwellinreadingtasks(Nation,2005). ResearchQuestions 1.IstherearelationshipbetweenphonologicalawarenessandvocabularyknowledgeamongmiddleschoolstudentslearningEnglishasasecondlanguage? 2.DoesphonologicalawarenessorvocabularyknowledgehaveagreaterimpactonthedevelopmentofreadingskillsamongmiddleschoolstudentslearningEnglishasasecondlanguage? Methodology Participants Fortymiddleschoolstudentsbetweentheagesof12-15learningEnglishasasecondlanguagewererecruitedfromapublicschoolinChina.Therewere20boysand20girls,withequalrepresentationfromeachgrade,andtheyhadbeenlearningEnglishforatleastthreeyears. Instruments 1.PhonologicalAwarenessTest:Thistestconsistsofseveralsubteststhatmeasurephonologicalawarenessskills,includingphonemicawareness,blending,segmenting,andmanipulatingsounds. 2.VocabularySizeTest:Thistestassessestheoverallvo
