Inthispaper,wefirstintroducethebasicprinciplesandcomponentsoftheKinectsensor.Itconsistsofthreemajorcomponents:anRGBcamera,aninfrared(IR)emitter,andanIRdepthsensor.Thedepthsensoriscrucialforcapturingthedepthinformationofthescene,allowingtheKinecttogenerateaccurate3Dskeletaldata.WealsodiscusstheskeletaljointestimationalgorithmsusedintheKinect.Thesealgorithmsrelyonmachinelearningtechniquestopredictandtrackthepositionofjointsbasedondepthdata. Next,wedelveintotheresearchonKinect-basedskeletonalgorithms.OneofthemostcommonlyusedalgorithmsistheRandomDecisionForest(RDF).Thisalgorithmmodelstherelationshipbetweenthedepthfeaturesandthejointpositionsusingadecisiontreestructure.AnotherpopularalgorithmistheJointRegressionForest(JRF),whichissimilartoRDFbutfocusesonregression-basedjointestimations.Bothalgorithmshavebeenproveneffectiveintrackinghumanskeletonsaccuratelyandrobustly. Furthermore,wediscussthechallengesandlimitationsofKinect-basedskeletonalgorithms.Onemajorchallengeisocclusions,wherecertainbodypartsarehiddenfromthesensor'sview.Thiscanleadtoincompleteorinaccurateskeletaltracking.Anotherchallengeisthevariationinbodyshapesandappearances,whichcanaffectthealgorithm'sperformance.Moreover,weaddresstheissueofnoiseandvariabilityindepthdata,whichcanimpacttheaccuracyofskeletaltracking.
