catalogscalled"gradeforgiveness"forgiveness"——ishelpingraiseGPAs.
Gradeforgivenessallowsstudentstoretakeacoursein

whichtheyreceivedalowgrade,andthemostrecentgradeor

thehighestgradeistheonlyonethatcountsincalculating

astudentstudent’’soverallGPA.

Theuseofthislittle-knownpracticehasaeleratedin

recentyears,ascollegescontinuetodotheirutmosttokeep

studentsinschool(andpayingtuition)andimprovetheir

graduationrates.Whenthispracticefirststarteddecadesago,

itwasusuallylimitedtofreshmen,togivethemasecondchance

totakeaclassintheirfirstyeariftheystruggledintheir

transitiontocollege-levelcourses.Butnowmostcolleges,

evengraduatestudents,togettheirlowgradesforgiven.

Collegeofficialstendtoemphasizethatthegoalofgrade

forgivenessislessaboutthegradeitselfandmoreabout

encouragingstudentstoretakecoursescriticaltotheirdegree

programandgraduationwithoutincurringabigpenalty.
