Introduction: Livestockfarmingisanimportantindustryinmanycountriesworldwide.Theproductionofbeef,milk,andotheranimal-derivedproductsisamajorcontributortotheeconomy.However,bacterialinfectionscanresultinsignificanteconomiclossesforthelivestockindustryaswellasposeapublichealthrisk.ThebacteriamostcommonlyassociatedwithinfectionsincattleincludeSalmonella,Escherichiacoli,Klebsiellapneumoniae,Pseudomonasaeruginosa,Staphylococcusaureus,andStreptococcusagalactiae.Therefore,developinganefficientandreliablemethodfordetectingthesebacterialpathogensisofgreatimportanceforthelivestockindustry. Polymerasechainreaction(PCR)isawidelyusedmethodforthedetectionofbacterialpathogensduetoitshighsensitivityandspecificity.However,conventionalPCRassayscanonlydetectonetargetatatime.MultiplexPCR,atechniquethatcandetectmultipletargetsinasinglereaction,hasbeenextensivelyusedtoovercomethislimitation.Bycombiningmultipleprimerpairsthatarespecifictoeachtarget,itispossibletodetectthepresenceofseveralbacterialpathogensinasinglereaction.
