LiteratureReview Speechacttheory,proposedbyAustin(1962)andfurtherdevelopedbySearle(1969),providesatheoreticalframeworkforanalyzinglanguagebehavior.Refusalisoneofthespeechacts,whichcanbedefinedas“theactofdecliningtodosomethingthatsomeonehasaskedyoutodo”(Liu&Zhang,2008).Sincerefusalspeechactsareofteninfluencedbyculturalnormsandsocialsituations,thespeechacttheoryandpolitenesstheory(Brown&Levinson,1987)haveprovidedappropriateanalyticaltoolsforstudyingthepragmaticfeaturesofrefusal. Previousstudiesonrefusalhaveexploredvariousaspectsofthespeechact,suchaslinguisticstrategies,culturaldifferences,andsocialcontext.Huang(2007)analyzedthepatternsofrefusalstrategiesusedbyChineseandAmericanEFLlearners.HefoundthatChinesespeakersweremoredirectandlesspolitethanAmericanspeakers.Thisstudyshowedtheimportanceofculturalnormsinspeechactrealization.Similarly,KimandKasper(1995)foundthattherewerecross-culturaldifferencesinrefusalpatternsamongAmerican,German,andKoreanspeakers.Theyarguedthatrefusalswereinfluencedbyculturalvaluesandcommunicationexpectations.
