Introduction:
Asanautobiographicalwork,MyEmperor'sReign,orWoDeDiWangShengYa,isasignificantpieceofliteratureinmodernChina.Thebookisregardedasanessentialsourceforunderstandingthelifeandthoughtsofthelastemperor,PuYi.Theauthor,ZhenhuaZhang,aimstopresentacomprehensiveandobjectiveaccountofPuYi'slifefromhischildhoodtohisabdicationandcaptivityundertheCommunistregime.ThebookhasbeentranslatedintoEnglish,buttherehavebeencriticismsofthequalityofthetranslation.Therefore,thepurposeofthisresearchistoanalyzetheEnglishtranslationofMyEmperor'sReignfromtheperspectiveofSkopostheoryandtoidentifythepotentialproblemsandsolutionsinthetranslationprocess.
LiteratureReview:
Skopostheory,proposedbyHansVermeerandKatharinaReißinthelate1970s,suggeststhatanytranslationshouldconsideritsfunctionorpurpose(skopos)inaparticularcontext.Thus,thetranslatormustbeawareoftheskoposoftheoriginaltextandthetargetreadership,aswellastheculturalandcontextualaspectsofbothlanguagesandcultures.Skopostheoryhasbeenwidelyappliedintranslationstudiesandhasprovidedausefulframeworkforanalyzingdifferenttypesoftranslation,suchasliterarytranslation,technicaltranslation,andlegaltranslation.
MyEmperor'sReignhasbeentranslatedintoEnglishbyateamoftranslators,buttherehavebeencriticismsofthequalityofthetranslation.Severalscholarshaveanalyzedthetranslationofthebookfromdifferentangles.Forexample,XiaomeiChen(2008)examinedthenarrativestrategiesandtheconstructionoftheprotagonistintheoriginaltext,whileLianyingShan(2011)exploredtheculturalandlinguisticaspectsofthetranslation.However,thereisalackofresearchthatanalyzesthetranslationfromtheperspectiveofSkopostheory.Thisresearchaimstofillthisgap.
