西南大学艺体生大学英语课堂沉默现象研究的中期报告 Introduction Inrecentyears,therehasbeenagrowingconcernoverthephenomenonofsilenceincollegeEnglishclassrooms.ThisstudyaimstoinvestigatethereasonsforthesilenceofartsandsportsstudentsatSouthwestUniversityintheirEnglishclasses.Thepurposeofthismid-termreportistoprovideanoverviewoftheresearchdesign,datacollection,andpreliminaryfindings. ResearchDesign Thestudyadoptsamixed-methodsresearchdesign,usingbothqualitativeandquantitativeapproaches.Thequalitativedatacollectionincludesclassroomobservations,individualinterviews,andfocusgroupdiscussions.Thequantitativedatacollectionincludesaquestionnairesurvey. DataCollection ThedatacollectionbeganwithclassroomobservationsoffiveEnglishclassestaughtbydifferentteachers.Theobservationswereconductedoverthreeweeks,andeachobservationlastedforanhour.Theobservationswererecordedinfieldnotes,whichincludedinformationontheclassroomenvironment,teachingstyles,studentbehaviors,andinteractionsbetweenteachersandstudents. Thenextphaseofdatacollectionwasindividualinterviewswithtenstudents.TheintervieweeswereselectedbasedontheirhighscoresintheEnglishproficiencytestandtheirlowparticipationinclassdiscussions.TheinterviewsaimedtoexplorethereasonsfortheirsilenceinEnglishclassesfromtheirperspectives.Theinterviewswereaudio-recordedandtranscribedfordataanalysis. Thethirdphaseofdatacollectioninvolvedfocusgroupdiscussionswithtenstudentswhowererandomlyselectedfromthesurveyparticipants.Thediscussionsaimedtocollecttheparticipants'opinionsonthefactorsthatmayleadtothesilenceofartsandsportsstudentsinEnglishclasses.Thefocusgroupdiscussionswereaudio-recordedandtranscribedfordataanalysis. Finally,aquestionnairesurveywasconductedtocollectquantitativedatafromalargersampleofparticipants.Thesurveyincludesquestionsrelatedtotheparticipants'backgroundinformation,theirattitudestowardsEnglishlearning,theirclassroomexperiences,andthefactorsthatmaycontributetotheirsilenceinEnglishclasses.Atotalof200studentsparticipatedinthesurvey.
